Wheel base is from the center of the front wheels to the center of the rear wheels You are not going to change unless you put a wide front on it. Look at the pictures below on the #4 picker mounted to a tractor. Your rear wheel hubs need to be to the end of the axles and the wheels switched from side to side. You have a buddie that has a set of pressed steel wheels you can put on there?
 
Perhaps I shouldn't get into this, but I seem to recall that the 77 broke rear axles when a picker was put on them. We put a picker on I think a 1950 77 and broke both rear axles. The replacement axles were made stronger and I don't know if there is way to tell the difference. If your tractor has had a picker on it before it may be ok.
 
You are correct, although I though it was just the 49 models. I changed one when the temperature was cold enough when I dropped the snap ring holding the bull gear on the oil supported the snap ring.
