Oliver 880 Hydralics

I have an Oliver 880. I don't know the serial number, because the tag was missing when I bought it. The serial number of the hydraulic pump is 61811.

I have changed out the hydraulic filter and oil. The tractor has a loader and I was able to lift the offset disk I own without issues once hoses and one cylinder was replaced on the loader.

I own a 5500 rebel vermeer round baler and I am not able to completely lift the tailgate. It does require about 1600 psi minimum. I did some reading in my oliver books. Is the pump really limited to about 1000-1100 psi? Are there newer pumps and relief valves that a person can get with a higher psi for the hydraulic system?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Yes 1000 pounds is about the maximum pressure. No that pump was designed during World War 2 and is not made to SAE standard. Can you put a larger cylinder for your round baler? That would be the best way to solve the problem

Thanks for the reply. That makes sense to me and just verifies what I have read about the lower psi. There are too many in my neck of the woods that think the psi on the pump can be 'cranked up'. I figure throwing at least $750 away is just crazy ruining the pump.

As for the baler, changing the cylinders is not an option. Looks like I will be putting the tractor up for sale. I really liked the tractor for other work, but I need one that works with the baler. I need the cash to put into another tractor.

Last 2 questions. Are any of the 'newer' model Olivers like the 1650 have higher hydraulic pressure? What is the Oliver 880 worth?

Everything works and runs great. It has all the panels, steps, tin is in great shape, very little rust. It has a Du-All loader 250. I did some work on it replacing worn out hydraulic hoses and one cylinder on the loader and tractor. Replaced worn or missing gear shift and hydraulic rubber coverings, replaced the muffler, and the usual maintenance all filters, oils, grease, and cleaned up about 40 years of grease and grime off of it, etc.

Thanks again for the help.

I run a Vermeer 504I with my 1655 and 1850 without any issues at all. Good baler tractor if you don't mind eating a little dust.

I've been baling with a 1550 diesel hooked to a NH 851 baler and its been working fine
can't tell the difference between it and the 1650 I usually bale with as far as hydraulics.Glad for the information about the 880 though as I had been looking at one and I'd want to bale with it so I guess its ruled out now.

Thanks for all the replies and info everyone.

I was pretty bummed when I made the discovery about the hydraulics. The tractor fit all the other requirements needed for the baler though.

Now I know the 1650 will handle the hydraulics and other requirements (drawbar HP, weight, etc) without an issue. This gives me more options for older tractors in my monetary range. A new tractor is just not an option.

In the mean time, my dad let me borrow his Ford 6410. It worked fine just pulled down a bit with heavier windrows or if I made a bale closer to the 5x5 size. So I stuck closer to the rebel 5400 requirements and made a 5x4 size bale.

I would never have figured hydraulic pressure would be the biggest issue I would have.

Thanks again everyone for the input.
