I've been baling with a new to me 1550 diesel runs good and does a nice job the problem I'm having is when it gets under load the engine will pull down like its running out of power, black smoke from the exhaust etc but after about 30 seconds the engine will open up,have plenty of power and exhaust clears up.I'm thinking maybe the governor is not kicking in quick enough or what else would cause this to happen?

After checking filters, and the engine pulls down again, push clutch down and disengage pto. This will tell you if there is a problem with engine or elsewhere.

The 1550 diesel has no fuel pump to push fuel threw the filters to the injector pump so it's gravity feed. Mine when it gets down to about 1/4 to 3/8 of a tank of fuel it starts running funny like you said so I try to keep the tank full as much as I can. If your fuel tank was low try filling it and using it and see if it dose it again and if it dose I would change the fuel and air filters like others have said. 1550 diesels can be fickly sometimes about fuel in the tank. Thanks fellas for the suggestions,it probably is the fuel filters.I bought this tractor back in the Winter changed all the fluids and filters except the fuel filters and hadn't gotten around to that when the head gasket blew on my 1650 and I had to press the 1550 diesel into service before I had intended. At least that will be a simple fix runs and operates really well otherwise.

That is fine. Just send me a reply and I will make out a list of some items to check when I get some time. IF it ever quits raining that be a while. J.
