570 still getting seconds

I went to a tractor pull on the 4th with my 570 Super.Came home with 2 more 2nd's.That makes 11 2nd's out of 16 hooks since I started pulling the ole girl again last year. The other five hooks I got 2 1st and 3 3rd's.Most times I'm getting beat by less the 2 ft.Sometimes by a few inches. She just runs out of power a little short of 1st place in the gear I need to go in.If I go in a lower gear it spins just short of 1st.I have nice cut radial tires and it always hooks real good.
The engine, injectors and pump are 200 hours old.Pump has been turned up to a max of 80 hp on dyno.I've advanced timing and turned rpm's up to about 2300 with no noticable gains on dyno so I put everything back near stock specs where the governor works best.
The tractor smokes plenty black under full load but this is where she has the best power.I have a little more to go on the pump adjustment but loose power if I go anymore.
Filters are new and I even installed an electric pump to ensure enough fuel.It runs and starts real good, just seems like I should be getting another 10 horse or so according to what I've read on here.
Can anyone think of anything I'm missing? Since I seem to be getting enough fuel I'd think the pump is doing it's job and I need more air.I even removed the pre heat coil from the intake and installed a K&N type filter to cut down on restrictions.Am I dreaming that anymore HP is obtainable from the 339" Herc without some boost?
If so,I'm at my wits end and thinking about a small turbo with light boost to use all the fuel I can give it with my stock pump without blowing my head gasket. Also stock rpm's in hopes of getting more torque at around 15-1800 rpms since this is where the governor likes to keep it anyways.I've talked to the Keystone turbo guys about this but want to pursue all choices before going down that road.
Mr.Schwiebert,Thanks for your reply to my rpm/pump question.I tried to reply back but I don't think my message has found you.If you have any thoughts on all this jiberish, please don't hasitate to give them to me.
Thanks all:TJ

Try a little propane in the intake manifold?
If you have a Dyno, good way to test. I used it on an Oliver 88 once. Just took a little Bernz-o-matic and some copper tubing.

If you are allowed to run a turbo, I would seriously look at going that route. Hercano Propulsion had a whole bunch of factory turbo manifolds off of GTA5.6 bus engines. These can be made to work in a tractor application by flipping them over and drilling new holes in the mounting flanges. After that, I would consider ditching the Bosch pump and going with a Roosamaster. I am not 100% sure on your 339 but I would be willing to bet you could mix and match parts from a 298 and the 3400 to do the conversion easily and pretty inexpensive.

Since I'm already in the enhanced class due to the year of my Super and cut radial tires,I am allowed to enhance my power as well.I've been thinking about it long enough and decided to pull the trigger on a turbo kit from Keystone.I gave them a call and told them what I was looking for. They are sending me a modestly sized turbo to produce power at stock rpm's and will hold on with boost down to around 1400 without giving up.The kit also includes an adjustable waste gate, mounting flange that will thread into my manifold and all nessesary lines, pipe and fittings.
As you mention,I've been told there are better pumps out there for power but I'm going to stick with my stock pump for now, turned up to max fuel.I'm hoping the turbo with under 10 lbs of boost will use up the excess fuel and burn a little cleaner at about 17-1900 rpm's.
Since the engine has a decent amount of compression I want to be a little conservative on the boost.I've been told compression is 14ish to 1 but my book says the older, smaller 298 Herc has 18 to 1 so I'm thinking my 339 would be about the same?
Anyone have an idea of a safe level of boost?I'd love about 30 more HP with a good bunch of lugging torque. We'll see what happens.I hope to have it on in a week or two and I'll be sure to let everyone know what happens,no matter how bad.
Thanks for the advice guys and keep the ideas coming. Can never have an engine that runs too strong.

not trying to hijack your post but do any of you Hercules experts know what the hp of a stock 339 gas should be also the compression at cranking speed? thanks

I would start low with the boost and inch it up. A friend of mine cranked his up and blew a rod threw the side, but was watching the boost gauge when it blew. He put a patch on the side, and set the waste gate just below were it blew, and it ran a long time.

Now the $10,000 question.Any ball park idea of what his boost is now or what it was when she busted.
Also I've been reading a lot about the positive affects retarding the injection timing a couple degrees has on reducing cylinder pressure and increasing torque when adding boost.Since I won't be turning over stock rpm's,this makes since to me.I'll run a baseline dyno test at it's current 25 BTDC and again @ 22BTDC.If I don't loose much I think I'll leave it retarded, and then put on the turbo.
The co. that sells the turbo thought I could expect a max of 10-12 lbs. of boost even even without a wastegate.I choose to install a waste gate anyways.

That's one thing that isn't allowed even in the enhanced class, propane injection. In fact,no add on injections of any kind are allowed, nos or even water.I've heard a little propane really brings a diesel around.

Sorry. That was back in the late 70s. His was a gasoline moror. He couldn't get any boost and called me to help him. His spark was advanced, and we got it retarded, and made a lot of heat to spool it up. If I guessed at the pressures, I could be off and don't want to mess you up.
