Restored this 550, replaced the carb with new Zenith. 12V coil w/internal resistor, condenser and points dis. Cap and rotor and Autolite 388 plugs. Ran alright for about 4 hours on the meter, now # 4 cyl is not firing. Good compression, seems to have a good spark on all four wires, they are new solid wire plug wires. Seems to be some difference of opinion on plugs. Anyone have experience with a change of type of plugs or ones that work better??

Change the plug! Well, better to check out if the plug is actually firing. If it is firing properly, look for the real cause. Could be any of a number of reasons from simple to expensive.

Try a new plug. Just because they fire out of the engine doesn't mean it works under pressure of a running engine. If that doesn't change it check the valve set maybe a rocker is out of the proper spot or a burnt valve or piston. That's basically all that can happen from easy to expensive.

Switch plugs with no.4 and another cylinder.if no. 4 still won't fire it's your wire or something previously stated.sometimes it's the connectors from plug to wire or wire to distributor not contacting

Also I have seen a plug not fire after flooding the engine.wet from gas and after drying never fired again.Rare but it happens

Try the plug in the dead cylinder in another cylinder. If the problem moves the plug is bad. If it stays where it was try moving the plug wire from another to it. If the problem still stays there if you have the old cap try that and see if it goes away. If still there maybe a valve problem with one valve not opening or closing as it should
