Backhoe off in 5 minutes. I'm impressed.

With the wife standing guard, I got the backhoe off in record time, and for the first time.

The steering is still binding. The power steering is doing it's job. I believe it's binding inside this box. I think it's supposed to have some sort of fluid in it, but not sure which bolt to check or how much or what's supposed to go in.

By the looks of it, that steering box needs to come off and be rebuilt. Looks like the shaft seal is leaking at the very least.

I checked hte ujoints, they bind a hair at one point per rotation. However I'm 90% sure it's the gear box. I narrowed it down to binding when I go all the way to lock. To unbind, I change direction(forward to back, or backwards to forwards) and go 5-10ft and it straitens out on it's own. I'm being careful for now, but I need to find some information on that steering box.

In hte mean while, I did get a LOT of dirt moved, and used my ferguson to grade it.

By the looks of that fluid leaking out of it, I'd say it has or had a lot of water in it. From looking through my book I think that's the Gemmer Steering Gear. I'd take it apart and inspect the innererds might just need everything cleaned up and refill with new lube. I'm not sure how this one is setup inside but like on the narrow front steering box theres an eccentric to set the pre-load between the worm shaft and stector. Say that was full of water and someone tried steering it when it was frozen and busted the lock screw for that eccentric and now your pre-load is messed its going to have binding spots. (had to take my 77 back apart cause I set the pre-load to tight.

Appears to be adjusted all the way in,you really need to pull the top plate off and take a look before you use it much and damage it more.Clean the box off good before you open it up so no more crud gets into it.
John Deere corn head grease works good in those steering boxes

The plan is to take it apart, it's parked in the garage now so I can open it up. If I need to replace either the gears, where might I get them?

I would guess the eccentric keeper is bad and forcing the gears together, a bit hard to describe but pretty easy to understand when you take the top off the
steering box.

Should I take anything else off to get to it? It's pretty crowded in there with the front pto going to the hydraulic pump, cage around the radiator to protect it, etc. None of which are really removeable.
