Oliver 77 power steering binding

Every once in a while the power steering binds, when I try to turn the wheel it squeels and won't turn in either direction. If I move forward and back a bit, then it turns fine. 90% of the time it's ok, but i'm going to drop the backhoe off, which will put a lot more weight on the front and I need to make sure it's not going to have any issues. The hydraulic reservoir is full, so I was thinking it's in the steering linkage. Any ideas?

Edit: The motor is from a super 88, so the power steering may be off that system. The generator has a shaft strait through it, belt turns the generator, and the shaft on the other side of the generator turns the power steering pump.

O. K. Back up here. Is this an Oliver power steering unit (the unit itself) or an aftermarket unit? How about a good clear close up picture? Do you have a pressure gauge that goes to at least a 1000 pounds. Has the front end been grease lately? How about the thrust bearings on the spindles? There was an early and a late style front axle.

I don't know if it's factory or aftermarket, but it looks like it came with it. Under the yellow paint is red paint, if that's any indiciation. The front is well greased, I hit every grease point every time I use it, especially after having to repair the broken tie rod. The front end is not the same as the farm tractors, it's different for the industrial, which made parts nearly impossible to find, and thus welding to repair.

Here is the power steering unit and pump. There's no model or serial number plate on it that I can find.

The most valuable item on there may be the generator and the pump! It is a Charlynn power steering unit. The power steering pump and if it is a Short frame generator is very hard to find!. Most likely your problem is in the linkage between the steering unit and the tires. Check the U-joints on the steering shaft first!. Have you checked the steering unit on the front axle for lubrication? I would replace the steering unit pump and sell it! Measure the length of the generator and give us the generator model too.

I want to keep my generator and pump! Everything about this tractor is a "one off" that i can't find a replacement for to save my life. I've had to be extremely creative for repairs.

Here's the S/N of the gen:

I have checked all the linkage to the wheels, haven't found anything yet. It's thoroughly greased. I've followed and tested all the linkage with the front off the ground, and haven't found any issues.

Do you know if the pump takes hydraulic fluid or power steering fluid? I'd like to top it off.

Well then at least check the filter in it! You need to look inside the steering gear under the radiator! Also need a picture of your front spindels. I would say that U-joint by the torque generator is not the best, how about down by the steering gear. Your thrust bearings on the spindles may be bad.

I'll look at it tomorrow do you know what fluid goes in? There's no filter that I've seen, just a screen on the neck.
