1958 550 Remote Hydraulics?

I just purchased a late 1958 550 (serial number around 70,000, I don't remember it off the top of my head). Currently it does not have remote hydraulics, what would be involved in adding them? I am assuming an actuating lever, hoses, etc? Thank you

There's a valve block that bolts to the right side of the top cover. Take a look at yours, there's a Y shaped piece with a plug in it. That comes off and the block bolts on there. Those are kind of hard to come by. You'll have to get one from a salvage, but there might be a waiting list for them.

I have a very nice Super 55 that I'm going to be parting out. It has the remote valve and the valve will be for sale.

Just a warning: I've got remote hydraulics controlling a double action loader and bucket on my Oliver 550. On a 550, the hydraulic pump is limited in terms of pressure and gallons/minutes. It works, but it is very slow. On a 550 you are talking of only 1500 psi and 5,25 gallons/min at 2000 RPM.

It does not bother me with my application, but check carefully the specifications for any accessory you can buy. You may have to consider an auxiliary pump driven by PTO for some demanding applications. For instance, there was no way I could consider an hydraulic logging winch on my 550 with such specs, but a PTO driven I use is very powerful.

All that matters, is to have reasonnable expectations toward 550 hydraulics.

(quoted from post at 08:12:17 07/06/15) Good point, I was thinking of a log splitter.
A log splitter would likely take forever to operate on the main hydraulic pump. Recent tractors run at 2000psi or more, with many more gallons per minute.

I've considered the cost of adding a PTO hydraulic pump kit for a log splitter on my 550, and found out it was not worth the cost compared to buy a bigger hydraulic log splitter with an independent engine. It would have made sense only if I found a used unit in good shape, and ended up buying a used independent unit.
