Heard over the weekend that the kits from A&I have the valve protrusions milled to deep into the pistons and cause hard starting, just incase anybody is having problems with hard starting. chris

I don't think that a couple cc less compression makes much difference in starting.
I have rebuild a 310 over the winter and the valves are no longer at spec protrusion either.(about 1/8" below the head surface.
The thing fires up just fine, hit the key and off it goes without pre heat.
A good well timed injection pump and top notch injectors and proper valve lash is more important than a couple PSI less compression

I overhauled a 1655 a year ago with AI parts and it wouldn't start with a darn unless 80 degrees. I done everything from rebuilt pump to head work done to max protrusion. Finally after another $1000 and a set of sleeves from maibachs which were arrow brand it starts below freezing in a couple turns with no preheater. I know of another one with the same results
