1655 steering cylinder

The agco parts book shows a quad ring between the pinion and the steering shaft. Where does it go? I'm replacing my old cylinder which had the end cap blown out and leaked like a sieve with a good used one. But I don't see the quad ring on either one of them. Does it go over the end of the pinion or around shaft at the bottom of the tractor pan frame?

Like John said there is a groove. The groove is at the bottom of the opening where the pinion fits down over the steering shaft. The pinion rides up against the quad ring. Careful not to twist the ring when inserting it or it will leak, best to clean and oil everything and slide the ring toward the groove while bunching up the ring slightly. Also may want to check the play in the steering shaft. If the shaft is moving around the needle bearings are worn and the bearings/seals should be replaced in the bolster -- if not replaced that will cause the new quad ring to wear. If the shaft has play the whole steering cylinder will move around when you steer.
