I guess this is why the brakes didn't work

The brakes only worked a little when the pedals were down to the foot plate. Pulled them off today. I ran a die over the adjusting screws and still had to fight the nuts all the way. Notice the bend screw. Lots of dirt and rust inside. It had nearly new linings, too.

My 1550 utility was just as bad when I took it apart as well as the brake disc were shot, Balls rusted in place springs broke a total mess. I bought a 2 sets of everything from a guy in Texas (off Ebay) used for $75 shipped and when I got them they look about new with little ware and everything worked great. It's sure nice to have brakes that work when you need them.

While you have it apart it would be a good time to drill 2 1/8" holes in the bottom of the brake casting housing, 1 in front and 1 behind the web in the casting (in the low spot) to let water out. Put a carter pin from the bottom up and bend the sides over about 45* so it can jiggle around in the hole and it will keep the hole clean and open to let water and dust out. Sounds dumb but it works and it really helps. Good luck and I hope this helps. Bandit

That's a good idea. It's like they have on the bottom of clutch housing. I got one stud out today, had to grind the nuts off the other three and the yoke pins are frozen. Springs, balls and disks are OK.

I do believe it was come to think of it. The nice thing about getting parts off southern tractors is lack of rust. Nice to pull used parts out of a box and put them on the tractor and go. They needed nothing, Good clean rust free parts and ready to go. One of the best things I ever did to fix a tractor. Good man to deal with too. Bandit
