1850 Cockshutt/detroit diesel

Hi I have an 1850 Cockshutt with the motor knocked out of it and a 1900 Cockshutt with no motor in but do have a 4-53 detroit in my shop. Can I take the tub off my 1900, put it on my 1850 and then drop my detroit in its place? Thanks

It probably will.
I have a 1855 with a 1900 tub and detroit and had only 2 issues to get it to fit.
I had to cut a 1/4" of the rear of the PTO shaft as it was that much to long and bottomed out against the crank shaft and I machined some material of the flywheel side of the PTO drive hub to provide clearance for the O/U input shaft.

Why would you want to put in a noisy and gutless Detroit in an 1850? The only thing a Detroit is good for is turning diesel in to noise....It was a happy day when I sold my 1950.

Also, if a Detroit is rebuilt correctly it does not drip oil like everyone thinks. Most of the drips are caused when something is removed and when they bolt it back togather they use a lock washer or a regualr flat washer and then oil drips out from the bolt. Detroits were built using sealing washers which works wonderful when installed!!!!

212 cubic inches is just not enough engine maintian it power under load. I never been on an 1850, but I got to believe that the 310 would out pull the 4-53 Detroit. The 310 has 50% more displacment than the Detroit....

I like em cause there unique and I'm bored in the winter and looking for a winter project. It's not gonna be a work tractor so much as a toy to play with

(quoted from post at 10:16:31 06/04/15) Also were you able to bolt the clutch and flywheel
off your 1855 and bolt it on to the detroit?
don't know if the flywheel and clutch will fit, mine had a 310 in it originally.
I bolted the whole 1900 front half incl Power steering cyl, rad, fan, air filters, engine with clutch, fuel tank and the hood to the 1855's rear half

I have 2 1855's, 1 with the 310, other one with the 4-51 detroit.
There ain't much diff in hp between the two at full throttle
but the detroit has more lugging power.

Really, that Detroit would out lug the 310???? Even on a fresh overhual there was no lug to that detroit I was not impressed with the way it luggs...Any Detroit I been they would just puke out.

I sold my Ollie and bought a JD4240....Night and day difference. 466 cubic inches, naturally asperated, it was a sigh of releif. It just lug its way through and does not hesitate.

The only problem with detroits is idiots can't set them up right.Anyone can make one run but it takes a real Detroit guy to make them snap.I had a 1950 with N60 injectors in it and would eat my 4430 all day.

And mine was set up by a Detroit guy. I also had N60 injectors in it. I gained about 3 ponies...You can increase the fuel, but if you can't increase the air you won't gain the anything. The roots blower pushes the same amount of air regardless of injectors. It was still a gutless noisy thing.

The 4430 has a 404 in it, not the 466 that my 4240 has. Your 4430 must of been wore out, bad turbo, or the injector pump. You can easily get 150 hoses out of a 4430 with out doing much to it or hurting it. And it will lug like hell compared to a 212 cubic inch 4-53 Detroit.
