Buda sleeve questions, please help

I put the sleeves in the E-4 block this morning. This is my first time with a wet-sleeve install. The trial fits were good, free turning and exactly flush. Lubed the bores and rings with liquid soap. After two attempts to push them in by hand the first ring would only start. I took it out and the seals looked OK so I went for the hammer and hardwood block. All six went in the same way. I could feel them contact the counterbore but they bounced back and stay about 1/32 high. I clamped them down with washers and all were dead flush but came back up when unclamped. Is this normal? I filled the block with cold water and let it set all day. No leaks. New piston passed through but I didn't check with a feeler gauge. Am I OK or should I pop them out tomorrow and re-check everything?

As the rubber seals twist slightly the sleeves will raise up a bit. As long as you have no leaks I'd put the head on. I've seen other wet sleeve engines do the same thing..

your liquid soap is not slick enough. go to your local NAPA store and get some rubber lube. It is far slicker than soap and your sleeves should not pop back up with its use.

Thanks for the advice. I'll check the clearances and if they seem to be off I'll pull them and check the seals. I'm going to call the supplier to see if this is normal. Probably will not do it today but I'll post back with results.

You say they were dead flush when clamped. Waukesha liners all protude to ensure a good seal with the fire ring. Just wondering what the specs were for this engine.

As others have noted, use the lube that is sold by John Deeere. I think it comes in a quart container and you only need just a couple of ounces, so you might beg/borrow/steal a little bit from a John Deere tech. That's what I have done and you use such a small amount that the John Deere tech doesn't even miss it.

I called Howard this morning and talked to a tech guy. He said he's had a few do that. I checked the piston to bore clearance on a couple and they're OK. If the others check out I'm going to leave them in.
