Oliver 500 Tractor

I was at an auction last week and saw a Oliver 500. It looked kind of like a David Brown with a gas engine and painted green. Whats the story on Oliver 500's?

1648 David Brown 850's were sent to the US and Canada from late 1960 until sometime in 1963 and sold as Oliver 500's. Most of those were diesel, but a few of the real early ones were fitted with David Brown Crop Master engines and sent over. I have a gasser in the process of being restored now.
At the time they were shipped over,DB had a dealer network in Canada but not in the US. DB didn't sell the 850 in Canada so Oliver was allowed to sell the 500's there. In 62 and 63 some 990's were painted and badged as Oliver 600's. There were probably fewer than 500 of those shipped. Since DB did sell the 990 in Canada,Oliver wasn't allowed to sell the 600's there, only in the US.
Ford made the decision to close their branch houses,so DB bought seven or nine of those in the US,I forget right off hand which number is right, but after buying those branch houses,DB set up their own dealer network and they stopped selling them through Oliver.
The real early ones can be a bugger to work on. The bolts and nuts were neither standard nor SAE fine thread. They were British standard fine thread. The later ones were standard.
I have pictures of them coming out my ears, along with some original sales brochure pictures if you're interested.
Oliver Jim on here has a beautiful diesel that he just finished restoring. If you search them on this forum, you'll find pictures of his, mine and some others.
Pretty neat little tractor and in my opinion, quite a piece of Oliver history. I'd like to find a cheap diesel to go with my gasser. A neighbor bought one new when I was a kid.
In fact,I bought a new disc mower/conditioner from an Agco dealer and the owner delivered it Friday. They used to be an Oliver dealer. I asked him if he'd ever seen one and took him in the shop to show it to him. He said he never had seen one in person, only in the books.

In Google search type in Oliver Farm tractor photos.   You will see several rows of photos, click on more photos and scroll down and you will see several photos of nicely restored model 500 tractors.

Thats the one I saw. I didn't stay for the sale. What did the ford 800 go for?

I thought the throwers were of some value. I would have liked to get the JD 953 running gear. I have several and the parts would have been useful. Instead I went home and saved money.

I bid the gear up to 50 and quit. An Amish guy bought it. I've got a few 953s. I think I've got 150 in all the kickers. I should have parts for life.
