Hard to start 1800 B

I have a 1655 with a 310 diesel it was swapped a few years ago before I bought it I done a head job on it around 6 months ago and all of a sudden now when the engine gets hot and is shut off it will not start back. Can anyone please give me some advice on this matter could it be a valve clearance issue or could it be something else. please help ???

Hard starting after shutdown for a short time usually means the injection pump has too much internal wear between the rotor and sleeve ports. Fuel that should go to a given injector instead leaks internally. Neighbor had a 1950T that did that, he got to where he never shut it off hot. If he killed it he would splash some water on the pump from a jug he kept in the cab to cool it enough so it would start. I don't recommend that as it can seize the rotor and break the drive shaft, but his was worn badly enough to get away with it..

When I started it after it had been used to mow about 5 acres of hay it had a slight pecking noise it was a little low on oil so I put oil in it and thought that it could have been the valve so I jerked the valve cover off and reset the valves with a feller gauge. Its just started this after I readjusted the valves it runs perfectly fine until its shut down. it starts easily when it is cold. I am hoping that I have just set the valve lash wrong. would the valve lash in these tractor affect hot starting??

Yes, setting anything wrong - really wrong - can cause trouble. That is why there are specifications!

If the pump head is the problem - excessive clearances when hot - cooling it is the obvious check to see if it makes a difference.

But it seems at best you need to check you have followed the correct procedure and correct clearances have been set as you do not seem too confident of whatever you did.
