follow up on PTO spline repair

A while back I posted pictures of my PTO shaft after welding and filing the splines. Some of you thought it should have had more welding. I thought so, too so I took it back to the guy and had him weld some other spots. Here are the results. It felt good to get my die-maker on again. It's been s while.

Nice rework (and I was one of the ones who thought it needed just a whisker more fine tuning the first time around).

Hope that 1550 makes it to the field this year. It should be one heck of a tractor with all the little things you are fixin.
 
I hope so. I'm working on getting the lower link supports back in with new seals, then fresh gear oil. Still hoping I don't have to get into hydraulics. At least another month before cutting hay.
 
It was TIG welded. I know a guy from work (Lincoln Electric) who's kind of an artist with a TIG torch. I left it up to him. I'll ask next time I see him. No heat treating, the TIG process doesn't put much heat into the part. But there is a little discoloration on the bearing area beyond the groove.
 
Yes. I used a small triangular file and worked the welds down to blend with the original unworn areas at the ends and between the disks. I used to be a tool and die maker. This is how it started out.

I am impressed! I don't have that kind of patience anymore.

I have a buddy that drag races a 61 Falcon with a Boss 302 in it and a top loader 4 speed. He cut every other tooth off of the synchronizers on 2nd and 3rd to make a "crash box". He periodically tigs up the male pieces and hand dresses them similar to what you did.
