Need help on 1550 brakes.

I finally got the discs & seals, so I'm starting to work on the brakes
I pulled the actuator out on the left side, but one bolt (with the yoke) facing the rear of the tractor was not in the hole. the nut apparently came off, but wasn't in there. The threads were a bit damaged, but I cleaned them up. That bolt is solid in the arm, so apparently the actuator turned on that bolt. Is that bolt splined into the arm (yoke)? Or should it be loose in the arm? Now the front one seems to be solid in the actuator, & doesn't seem to be splined into the arm, the arm is loose on the bolt. Is that the way they are supposed to work? or is something wrong?? Do I need to get a lock nut for the rear that is missing.

Also is there a bearing right close to the seal. Wouldn't want to damage a bearing when I put a screw into the old seal to pull it out.
Thanks in advance for the help.
John

Johnny, I just pulled the actuator out of this 1600 and that is one piece. Brake was hanging up on this tractor and got it working for now.

Greg thanks for your reply. there are 2 arms that go to the actuator & one has a yoke at the pin where the 2 arms meet, & the on the bottom (the arm that has a yoke) was out of the actuator. The nut obviously came off, but was not in the housing. Previous owner obviously was in there but never fixed it. My problem is does the bottom arm in your photo turn on the bolt, or is the arm supposed to turn on the bolt? because if the actuator turns on the bolt, & touches the nut, sooner or later that nut will come off again... me thinks.. Just wondering if I should loosen that bolt out of the arm. Should the bolts be tight in the actuator?
John

OK it's the one with a bolt & nut. That nut came off & the bolt came out of that hole in the actuator. Consequently no actuator to work the brakes. Is that bolt supposed to be tight in the actuator or is it tight in the arm going from the pin. I'm thinking that bolt should be tight in the actuator after I put the nut on, & that arm should turn on the bolt.. My bolt is tight in that little arm, don't know a better word for it.
John

Thanks, so the actuator works on the bolt. Is the nut a locking type nut, or would a regular nut work. I don't see a lock washer on the other one. just wondering why the original nut fell off. And if the actuator works back & forth beside the nut I would think the friction would eventually turn the nut off.. unless it was spot welded..lol..
I really appreciate your help. Now I can start putting it back together.
John

Sure felt like a lock nut when I took it off! That 1600 in the picture was rescued from the weeds last fall. It had sat for a few years and everything was crusty and set up. He has pulled a disc with it for a couple days with no major malfunctions. Greg

Thanks for all your help. Will go to the Nut & Bolt shop Tuesday & see if they got one. Monday is a holiday here, so everything will be closed. I had removed a bunch of topsoil and took some hill down, now I want to put the topsoil back on with the front end loader, & it's hill all the way around, so it's necessary to have them brakes working. will start putting it together Wed.
Hard to believe but we're still in the high 20's at nights, so not much fun sitting on the ground till afternoons.. lol..
Looking at your tractor doesn't look like it sat in the weeds. New ones are nice but there's something about these old ones that makes it worthwhile to climb on & let nostalgia take over.

John, the 1600 isn't mine but I helped get it running. Still runs a little rough at idle but smooth under load. Here is a few pics of my tractors. The 1555 with 1650 side panels I paid $1200 for about 5 years ago. My dad bought the 1555 brand new in 1973. I sold it in 1994 and happened to see it in the weeds. Found a 1650 gas engine on craigslist for $400 air cleaner throttle linkage and hood from ebay all together less than $100. New front tires was the first thing I bought. You should of seen the sales ladies face when my wife told her it didn't even run. The White my dad and I bought in 1989 brand new. He died in 1991 and my mom sold the farm in 1994 but still have the horse he bought and used one of his wrenches on that brake job. Greg

Nice pics Greg.. Not many Olivers in my area, nor Cockshutts for that matter. Would love to have one of those. More MH, Case, MM's & a few Co-Ops kicking around. I had a Cockshutt 40 with an Inland FEL, that I sold many years ago, & I've been kicking myself ever since.

(quoted from post at 11:59:39 05/17/15) John, in my quest for knowledge today I pulled that bolt out and it has a shoulder and was tight.

Any idea where I can purchase that bolt & nut.. The threads on mine are chewed up a bit, though I did clean them up..
