alright lets talk cummins repower!! I have a 1655 that has a questionable 283. I am having the 3 speed repaired so the tractor has been stripped down to her skivvies. has anyone placed the big oil burner in the tub of a 1655? I know brad maibach has done this with awesome results as seen on you tube. has anyone else accomplished massaging one of these in the tub? what about the 4bt cummins?
 
Whatever you do, don't do a 4b. I've done two, and will never do another. You should have a counterbalanced engine, which has a huge oil pan, that a 16 frame does not like. Even then, they're noisy rattly nuisances. A 6 is the way to go. Smooth, quiet, common, easier to install. Fit's in a 1650 frame beautiful. Mine is in the process of going back to a farm tractor with a stock 5.9.
 
Wow. I was just about to ask a question like this!
I've got an 1800B gas with a bad crank that I can't decide what to do with. Well, I could get a 6BT for about the same as fixing/replacing that 283. I'd rather have one with a Cummins, but I don't know if an 1800B would worth it for all the work to swap it over. I'm much more a diesel fan than the gassers. Maybe it would be worth it to keep it original, fix it, sell it, and find some other Oliver to put a Cummins in.
 
if you are brad i was wondering if you would mind me picking your brain so to speak? i have emailed your shop thru the website but it must be going to the trash bin or spam folder. i will probably re-use the 283 as installing a 6bt is out of the budget for now. i would however like to gain some extra hp in the rebuild since i will pull it when complete. can you suggest a build with parts you can supply including the head. the 3 speed is at the shop now for repairs so i plan to try and fix any issues and replace components in disrepair and repaint. any help you provide will fall on grateful ears.
