Ok still trying to follow-up on a 1600. Diesel and supposed to run good. The rest looks rough. My diesel 1550 runs poorly but looks (or could) look good. Will the Diesel engine out of a 1600 go directly in a 1550? If it's a maybe or a bunch of work to find out I may just be better off to rebuild or get mine rebuilt. Guy keeps coming down on the price and I don't think it's going to last too much longer. As I said it looks pretty rough but has a loader. He's down to $3500.

The 1600 engine is an inch longer behind the rear motor mounts. I don't know if the drive sprockets will slide on far enough to go together or not. You'd have to use the 1600 PTO shaft.

I thought the sprockets were different to compensate for the length difference. So, if you used the sprocket(s) from the 1600 it would work? I may be wrong - I've never done that swap before.

I don't know. I asked one time and never got a real answer. I know they'll slide on the splines a ways. Especially the back one on the transmission input shaft. You'd only need a half inch on each sprocket.

Sitting here waiting for the fertilizer truck,so I looked it up. Same part number for both sprockets on both tractors.

I bet I'm thinking of the difference between hydra-power and hydral-shift, which are different spline count, but I don't know if they're different lengths. It just seems like I've seen some sprocket that was longer before, but I can't remember what it was for.

Yeah, I know you can slide the rear sprocket back a ways, maybe even enough to get it to fit in there. It would be interesting to find out. If anyone's got one without a chain on it, it would be interesting to find out if it will slide back an inch or not. I suppose the sprockets could be machined down a little to help as well.

I've had the injector pump rebuilt. Back on tractor. Can't get it to run smoothly and have heavy white smoke. Does not clear up. Have moved pump in slots in an attempt to time. It gets better fully retarder but not acceptable at all still tons of smoke. Removed round cover and moved one hole in either direction. Won't start when in either of those. Put it back to where I started and it will start and run albeit poorly. No matter what I still only have about 7lb of oil pressure and I've checked it with 3 gauges.

I'm not a diesel expert but white smoke from a diesel is from misfiring. Pump was rebuilt but what about the injectors. Could be some are not atomizing the fuel.

I have not done anything with the injectors. Pump was rebuilt due to lack of power. There were issues with it that the pump shop took care of. Prior to the rebuild it smoked a little now it's really bad. Could it be that with the injector pump working properly that it's caused poorly operating injectors to get worse?

chief83, I have 1555 with a 1650 gas engine right now. Input shaft is longer in 1555 you could cut it and PTO input shaft or drill new holes in the frame. I also put a 1650 diesel in this tractor back in 1992.

Do keep in mind a 1600 diesel was 1900 rpm at Wide Open Throttle and 1740 engine rpm for 540 PTO shaft rpm.

The 1550 was 2200 rpm for WOT as well as 540 PTO rpm.

Now whether the cam in the 1600 is well suited so that a few more engine rpm could be easily attained while still being in the sweet spot of the motor - for that I have no idea.

How about if we handle one problem at a time? When you line up the timing marks in the injection pump what degree mark on the flywheel lines up? Have you had the exhaust manifold off and run the tractor? does the white smoke just come out of one port or more than one port? On the oil pressure is that wide open for 7 PSI / What oil are you using? Do you get fuel in the pan? Got e-mail and or a phone number?

[email protected]. 3605978538. John I'm currently out of town and plan to be back on Sunday. Then hope to be home for awhile.
I can only find one timing mark on the pump. I've had a couple people help look and just can't find the other half. Talked to the pump shop guy abut it and he didn't seem concerned. Kind of the same problem with the timing mark. Took small cover off and can see the pointer but in multiple attempts can't find a mark on the flywheel. I've not had the manifold off. I have 30wt oil in it. I'm off to the airport. Thanks
