Fried battery

When I run my 1650 gas, the battery will boil. I changed voltage regulator and now the ammeter shows it not charging. When I turn on the lights, it shows discharge. The battery was just charged to a full charge. Does this sound like a bad alternator?

If it is capable of frying the battery, probably not. Did you test the output with the old reg for Ac voltage, indicating bad diodes?

A bad battery will boil when charged at normal voltage. Got another battery you can swap in and try?

I'll try another battery, this one does have some age on it, but it has always started the tractor, even in the winter.

I tried another battery, fired right up, but still showed a discharge when I turned on the lights.

Only way you will know for sure is use a volt meter to read what battery voltage is when not running then with it running. Should read around 12.3 volts or a tad bit more when not running and then around 13-14 volts running. DO NOT try the remove the battery cable to test it that is a good way you hurt your self and also burn out the charging system. I will again say do not use that test

I put the meter on the battery and had 13 volts, started it up and still had 13 volts. The difference from the 12+ could be the meter, I guess.

I'm going to reinstall the old regulator and test that tomorrow. I'll let you know what I found. You're right, it can't boil a battery if it isn't charging.

I just hooked up the old regulator and it read 13 when not running and 17 running. The new regulator did not charge at all. the numbers may be 1 higher than what it should be, but 17 seems too high. I think I may have a bad (new) regulator. I'll try another one once I exchange this one. I think we're getting closer to a solution.
Thanks everyone
