Do the 1550 and 1600 share the same sheet metal? Are there other major components also. I have a 1550 that continues to give me fits and have located (but not seen) a 1600 that is supposed to be mechanically good. Thinking about using mine for parts plus the other one has a loader.

Early 1550's do. The later 1550's have the 3 piece sides. If you have the 1550 there for parts and they are three piece,I think you can take all the brackets off and swap it all over. I know you'll have to take the side plates off the radiator and change those. Probably something back by the gas tank too.
I think the holes in the hood might be different though if you wanted to use your hood. It will be if your 1550 has a dry element air cleaner.
