Oliver 1855 Hydraulic Pump

I have an 1855 and the hydraulic pump has been a problem for a while now. I have a neighbor that used to have an 1855 also and he told me he put a John Deere pump on his and he never had an issue again. My neighbor claims the Deere pump is more reliable and less fussy. He doesn't have the tractor anymore so I cant go look at it. Has anyone ever done this or heard of this? Is it possible and if it is how do I do it?

Well that is interesting. What model John Deere/ If he is talking the Deere built pump I doubt it. It is a radial pump not an axial pump. If he is talking the Oil Gear pump like on a 6000 series Deere it would fit, BUT they are set up for load sense. What is the problem with your pump?

I don't know what model Deere pump he used. My pump has been replaced 2 times and it still gets hot. The oil is so hot you can't touch it.

O. K. If the pump gets hot it is pumping when it should not be pumping so what checks were made to determine where the problem was? In otherwords how was the system checked? You have a phone number/

If the system is getting hot it sounds like the relief is set below the compensater on the pump. I think some testing needs to be done before
you start swapping pumps. Deere did not make there own pumps so to say it was a deere is probably not true and that green causes cancer!!
Also the filter on the inlet side of the pump is the real problem with the system as they were designed, Pumps are made to push not to suck
and a plugged filter in bypass can take a toll very fast. Most of the filter elements are a cellulose and water will plug them faster than
dirt.

Is it doable to plumb the filter after the pump? Maybe between the pump and the pressure relief valve?

No: Right now I am guessing you have not made any checks with gauges on the system at all. You need to do that so you are not guessing at what is causing your problem. If you drive the tractor straight ahead without using any hydraulic function, does the hydraulic system make a noise? You have a phone number or e-mail? J.
