HPOCA 1600 article

I know I'm a little behind but just finished reading the HPOCA article on the 1600. I've noticed some 1600s have the old style steering wheels like the 770/800 and early 1800s, some have the newer dished style of the XX50 and later series. It wasn't covered, but was there a certain period in time or serial number when this change was made? Was there a change in something, perhaps the steering gears, that allowed a slightly smaller steering wheel?

Two reasons. Some farmers liked the smaller dished wheels and purchased them to replace the larger wheels. The smaller dished wheels were a feature of the new 50 series. Also if your hydra-motor steering unit went bad and you replaced it with the Char-Lynn unit you got a new steering wheel. Questions J.
