80w-90 Gear oil or 10w-30 engine oil in the trans?

I'm hearing both, not sure which will work better at this point. There was concern about 10w-30 not coating the exposed gears as well to protect against moisture from what I've read, but at 63 years old, is that still relevent? I plan to keep the machine another 20+ years and want the best protection I can get.

Also is there a way to check the level anywhere other than the plug in the side? Some sort of stick? Judging from the bottom of the transmission, I'm sure it's down a bit.

I cannot tell you from experience but my uncle, who was an Oliver mechanic for years told me (I have a 1959 Oliver 770 with the specs saying to use that light weight oil with an additive) "Before you run that tractor even out of the shop, drain that oil out of the tranny and replace it with 90w tranny oil!" That was his words and he was a good mechanic for many years. Good luck!

Thanks, that was my thinking. No idea when's it was done last, I'm going to ru. It around for a few min to warm it up, then back to the garage to drain.
