1750 charging system

I finally got to the bottom of my 1750 steering column not locking problem. Past owner had switched Saginaw unit with Char Lynn unit from something and had fabricated a new bracket to latch the steering column. The bracket had broken because of bubble gum welding. So I removed the dash after disconnecting the battery. I disconnected the wiring from the gages( marked the wiring with labels as I disconnected it), removed the steering wheel, got the broken bracket out and repaired it. Reinstalled everything. Steering wheel now locks properly.
But I found that the charging system now does not work after reinstalling the gage wiring and reconnecting the battery. The tractor has a one wire alternator that was installed prior to my ownership and the wiring does not match the book. The alternator required the engine to be revved up to start charging. I have double checked all the connections with a trouble light and they are good, tractor lights work, amp shows discharge when lights are on and when starting tractor, other gages work.
All I did was disconnect the battery prior to starting the job. I have replaced the battery previously and the charging system worked after the battery was replaced.
Any ideas on what to look for or troubleshoot would be appreciated.

O. K. First of all when your 1750 was new it used the older Delco alternator with an external regulator. You probably have a Delco 10SI now so the wiring will not match!. Also a single wire alternator needs engine RPM to start charging. Me I would wire it like a 10SI should be wired and get rid of the single wire system.

Thanks John- when this alternator goes bad, that's what I will do.
Anyway, I went out this afternoon and went through everything again. I found a bad connection at the plug on the alternator. When I was jigging the harness around to remove the broken bracket, the plug must have been pulled loose. Cleaned the plug and its terminals and made sure the wire splice to the plug was good and pushed the plug on tight. Bingo- the alternator began charging. Its the simple things that get you.
