update on 2-70 rebuild/cracks in block

Well I have a boat anchor! Took block in to have it hot tanked, and Al found 2 cracks in the lower webbing of the block that starts in the bores where the sleeve O-rings seal, and migrates down thru the webbing a couple inches.( Many thanks to John S. and those who said "as long as bottom is not cracked") He agreed with us that the cracks on the top where head gasket seals where no problem, but the lower cracks are next to impossible to fix. Other than pouring it part full of hard block, but I do not think this is a smart thing to do? I do have another block but it is a 310 block out of a I think a 1855.(as far as the fellow knew I bought it from) Problem is it is missing a main cap, so I will have to have it line bored. My question here is the block essentially the same as the 283? I think the earlier indirect injection 310's where somewhat different as the head bolts where 5/8 v/s 9/16.Plus I think cams where different orientation? The casting number on the 283 is 221620 and under that is 166425A then under that is 7156 On the 310 it is the same first two groups of numbers but the last 4 digits are 2255. I am hoping I have the same block, if so I will get it hot tanked to see if its o/k. Foolishly I have already ordered my overhaul kit so I am pretty much committed. I do still have the notion that maybe I should just keep the overhaul kit for another time, as it is turning into an expensive project. What is a decent 2-70 with a fresh engine worth in your guys neck of the woods? I let one go at a sale yesterday for $4000 but it had oil running down under the back three exhaust ports, and had oil leaking from both trans front, and hydraul shift rear seals, tires where not great, and 1 side tin was bent up. But it did run half decent. But then 2 weeks ago one went for 8000 with supposedly 1260 original hours. It did not run as good as the one yesterday, had rotten tires, leaking rad, and both tires where shot. I am thinking A good 2-70 with decent rubber, and a fresh engine has to be worth at least the $8000?? Opinions?

Tom: Some 283 & 310 engines used the same blocks. I had a listing of casting numbers of probably 90% of the Oliver block casting numbers on my old computer. Due to my grandkids using it and it getting a virus I lost probably 20 years of notes and information. Take your boat anchor block and take the caps from it and see how it fits in the other block. Also when I worked in the machine shop we line-honed several Oliver blocks. Cheaper, quicker and trues up the whole block. If I understand you right the 4 numbers you are talking about are the date codes for when the block was cast. More questions? Got a phone number? J.

Dennis Mautzke from Monroe, WI has a block out of a 2-70 with two small cracks at the top. He won't sell it to you if it's bad. His number is 608-325-2941. Good guy to deal with.

A place in Morrice Michigan has a lot of parts for those on ebay. They have this block for $750 and might have the parts you need.

I know of a couple 310 engines tractor pullers are using that was cracked in the bottom and they used that pour in sealer and they never have had a problem I heard of,might be different
if you're constantly running the tractor doing field work though.
