310 turbo , piston -to head valve clearance?

had to surface block deck pretty hard to fix the blown gasket damage ( not more then .020) , now im wondering how much clearance i need between piston & head, also valves to piston , i know its going to be somewhat of a guess how much the new gasket will crush down ,i do have old one that i could get a idea of firing ring thickness , if needed can these pistons just be turned down on the tops? i know valves on a race engine need .010 min. to piston , turbo diesel may need more for heat exspansion thow , thought maybe someone who has had this problem could share what they know on this topic , so i dont have to learn by a costly mistake

We had around .010 taken off the deck of ours without any issues. We turned the tops of the pistons down on another 310 we have for pulling. Remember they have valve relief pockets in the pistons. If you're worried about piston to valve contact, you may have to put it together and test fit a cylinder. I was told .010 to .015 shouldn't be an issue.

On an 1855 a friend of mine have to shave the pistons because of a slight knock when engine was hot. But I think the block was shaved down more than once. Would not worry too much if it was me.

i think ill be fine , but if i just knew how much min. clearance is needed i could just measure things befor putting head on & save buying a 2nd over priced head gasket when it hits, ive learned the hard way once there torqued dont reuse them, ive built racing engines in the machine shop for years i know everything will exspand & stretch with RPM, of course no 310 will turn 8000 RPM but im sure it will stretch so to speak at higher R's , & being turbo diesel it will surly exspand under that kind of heat , ive heard that some brand head gaskets tend to be thicker then others , so that will come into play too , ive overhauled lots of cummins engines & they make oversize gaskets to fix a block thats been surfaced more then spec. but of course there overhaul manual give you the specs. original Oliver shop manual dont ( yes i have a dealers type shop manual) , mine dont even give valve protution , but the specs. are out there , maybe i need to find a waukesha manual not olivers ? great thanks to all for the help on this overhaul
