1850 Fuel Delivery

Started having problems with my 1850. It would run for like 5 minutes and then sputter out... It is a gasser and the fuel pump has been bypassed, just gravity feed with a fuel filter between sediment bowl and carb. I have taken the tank out to clean it and found a very odd black oil like sludge coming from the take that will harden and dry out when not mixed with gas.

Any ideas what this is or from???

I have an old four wheeler tank rigged up now with no filter between tank and carb and it runs fine. After I clean and probably redcote the tank should I rebuild or find a fuel pump or will they run OK off of gravity? And should I also have a filter before carb or are the too restrictive?

Also will post numbers here for which front crank oil seal I need since no responses on other thread...

Pictures of aftermath of draining tank.

O. K. Tomorrow I will be out of a computer for a few days. So here You may also have the needle sticking in the seat. By the way the engine serial number is stamped by the alternator bracket. You have a phone number I can call before my computer leaves? J.

Sorry, didnt mean to ruffle any feathers, I just thought it got lost by the wayside...

How does 88694 sound for an engine number?
