Simple job replacing the seals, quad ring, etc. but I can't seem to get the snapring out that is above the pinion gear, to be able to pull the pinion out [IT Service Manual paragraph 57 - ring is #8 in diagram]. I have not run across this type of snapring. I chased it around for a good 45 minutes with a couple of straight screwdrivers before giving up. Is there a trick to getting it out or does it take a special tool?

Huh? If you and I are thinking of the same snap ring you DON'T take it out. You use the bolt to loosen the gear from the splines. Then lift the gear up and out. Make sure you align the timing marks. I don't have an I & T book handy

Exactly! I had it out with somebody here a year or so ago who insisted that he needed to get that snap ring out. He was so intent on not giving up that he resorted to saying he needed to get it apart to clean the crud out of it. I don't think so,it runs in hydraulic oil and there's no way to get any crud in to any part of it.

So ya,pop the cap out, turn the bolt until it comes up against resistance, then keep turning to pull the gear off the shaft. The shaft is tapered,so when it lets loose,it'll come all at once.

I tried that last year and gave up. You really don't need to take it out. The cap (put a new O-ring on it) seals the inside of the gear from the fluid. It's actually open to the bottom where it sits on the shaft. Be careful not to roll the quad ring when you put the gear back in. I think I did, it leaks a little.

Many thanks. Boy was that dumb or what! And I was only drinking coffee this afternoon, honest!!

The cylinder was really pouring out fluid when turning the steering wheel. I also noticed that when turning the wheel L or R, the whole cylinder moved a little bit. Is that a bad sign?

A slight turning side to side just means the anchor pin is worn. If the ends of the cylinder are rising when you steer it means the steering shaft bearings are loose. My 1550 did that. The whole lower bearing and seal were gone. Upper bearing and shaft were worn. Lower shaft is the old one. Notice bearing areas.

I hope it's only pouring out the bottom or the end cap. The one on my 2-135 cracked last fall. I had to get a different one from Smitty.

Got the cylinder out and it should be good as new after replacing the seals. The shaft has about 1/8 inch of play, I'll see if Smitty has the needle bearings. Appreciate it, thanks for all of the help.

Finally got back to working on this, the end cap on the cylinder is not coming off. Got the snap ring out (was the mother of all snap rings) but I'm beating up the lugs on the end cap getting it out. The cap pulls out and is not threaded, right? I'm trying to rotate the plug with a pipe wrench to get it started. Any ideas? Would it help for it to spend the night in the freezer?
