1550 diesel

Ok finally back on the 1550 project I started several months ago. Injector pump rebuilt and when I reinstalled huge white smoke and heavy diesel smell. Could not seem to get the pump timed correctly-or so I thought. Finally loaded it up and took the whole thing to the injector shop. What a great guy. Came out and messed with it for sometime. He agreed that either timing or sucking air somewhere was the problem. When advanced as far as we could turn it, it was better but not good enough. I will run it on diesel out of a can tomorrow to see if it runs better and to eliminate an air leak as the issue. If timing is still the problem I'm going to take off the pump and elongate the mounting holes to get a couple more degrees of advance. He seems to think one or the other (maybe both) will do the trick. We will see. I have no visible diesel leaks but it would be sucking and not under pressure.

The pump drive gear has multiple threaded holes for more timing adjustment, no need to elongate the pump mounting holes. Just move the two gear bolts and put the pump drive hub where needed..

Yes, all Oliver diesels have the design that diesel tech is talking about, just remove the little round cover that has the 5/16 inch cap screws and you will see what we are talking about. Center the slots again too. You are making way too much work out of this.

If it starts right up I wouldn't think the timing would be too far off. From the way you described it I'd be checking the fuel for water or lack of air flow.Or like the 1550 diesel I just bought the bowl in the air cleaner had water in it.

I seem to always make more work out of something....
Glad to hear there is a potential easy fix. Not sure where the round cover is but will look this afternoon--is it on the pump? Once I find the cover I should do what with the gear?

The round cover is about 7-8 inches in diameter and bolts to the cast timing gear cover. Remove it and you will see the gear and the 2 bolts. They should have a safety wire through the heads. Cut the wire. Push in on the gear with one hand and loosen the 2 bolts. But before you start align the correct timing marks in the pump window. Then double check the mark on the flywheel. It should be @ 4 degrees BTDC. Once you have the flywheel set see where your timing marks are in the window. You may be all right and you have some other problem, Questions? Post your phone number and I will call you after church tonight.

Thanks John. Unfortunately I will be out of town until late Saturday, leaving again Sunday am. I should be home Saturday evening and Sunday evening--and hopefully all next week! 360 5978538. I know the round cover now. Looks like there are 2, one towards the front and one towards the pump. I assume you are talking about removal of the front one. But first, lining up the pump timing marks. To do that I need to crank the engine around until they line up perfectly. I've not done that but assume its not too difficult. Then pull the round cover and go through the directions you gave in the previous email. Look forward to talking with you. This 1550 is a pretty tired old girl I think but hopefully if I hit it enough with my check book and some time it will be usable.
