Just tearing into a 283 and found crank mains and rod bearings in decent shape. Looks like previous owner had recently rolled a set of bearings in it. I would like to save the expense of buying bearings but I am coming up with almost .004 clearance on mains. Rods are .0025 to .003 Just wondering opinions of you Oliver gurus? The journals are all in excellent shape

4 thou is pushing it. You got mike the journals and see if that is still within specs, if they are then i would replace the shells.

Not sure if it's the same on bearings for that motor, but in automotive applications, some brands run a little tight, some run a little loose, so a change of brands of bearings might tighten it up some. Just a thought.
