Generator question

I have a 12 volt generator I wanted to use on my 77. All the diagrams I have show positive ground. Can I change that to negative ground? Also the red wire from voltage regulator that goes back to the switch I need to know on OEM switch which terminal to hook to. Sorry if any of my terminology is incorrect but have tractor running great now I need to get it charging. I'm using a 1600 diagram then I saw its positive ground. Thanks Greg

All Oliver's with generators were Positive ground! Are you using the 1600 regulator? If so keep it positive ground. There were 2 different OE switches used on the Fleetline tractors. I will need to look that up tomorrow. J.

Thanks J. Schwiebert. I took it for a ride up the hill and that thing runs great. The tires on it are 16.9-38's and on serial plate was C77C. I am not sure on the regulator. Tractor is a 1951 if that helps. Thanks again Greg

On the 1600's,the regulator was a flat mount. It didn't mount on the generator like they did on the 77's. I've got a 12 volt positive ground 1600 generator on my 77. I put the regulator up under the dash next to the battery on mine. I had to rebuild the battery box anyway,so I welded a plate to it and mounted the regulator on it.
My 66 has an earlier 12 volt generator with the saddle mount type regulator. That one was the easiest to do. It must be off a diesel,a later Super or a 3 digit. I put a new wiring harness on that one and the 12 volt wires up the same as the 6 volt.

Thanks rrlund , here is a pic of the generator I was going to use. I need to get a 77 wiring diagram and for the price I should get a new wire harness. I need to get a picture of the switch I believe its original and I got the screws out. I dropped the hood and fender off to a body shop fender was just bent up not rusty so I have to eat pbj for awhile to pay that off! Lol Greg

That looks like the one on my 66.

This is the only diagram I have,it's for a 66,but it should be the same. John's right though, there are two different switches for those. I think one was for a tractor with Hydralectric and the other one was for one without if memory serves me right.

I know what you mean about the body shop. The hood, grille and fenders for my 500 are there now. He gave me an estimate of $1000-1200,but I'll be surprised if that holds when he's done.

Thanks again rrlund I'm off to work on my friend's 1600 now. I'm sure this 77 had hydra -electric because I took the broken switches off the steering column the other day. Greg

Greg: I looked yesterday and I see I have that at work and I am catching a plane this morning and will not be back till next week. Sorry. J.
