I have a 1972 Oliver 550. I have had it several years and have gotten a lot of work out of it – brush cutting, landscaping, hauling round bales, dragging trees up to the house, moving root balls etc.
However, there is one thing I deeply regret: that is that I did not get something with a front end loader. There have been plenty of times that I wish desperately that I had a front end loader for various tasks around here! Even now I have a major project that needs a front end loader.
So here's what I'm wondering: have any of you guys had any experience with a front in loader on an Oliver 550 or the like?
I have found places online selling aftermarket inloaders but of course there are thousands of dollars. I'd like to find a used one that would fit it if I can. Do any of you guys know where to get a front end loader that would fit the Oliver 550 – a used one I mean?
Also, besides the hydraulic for the three point, my 1972 Oliver 550 also has a couple auxiliary hydraulic hoses for accessories so I assume that is where the front end loader hydraulic would connect? Also, I'm not sure how these would attach to this old tractor. Is there some location on the tractor that receives the front end loader to be attached or does custom work have to be done in the Way of drilling and welding etc. in order to make it work?
Another thing, my tractor does not have power steering and I'm sure that is something I would want if I was hauling hundreds of pounds out in front of me. I should be able to get an aftermarket power steering set up for this tractor, correct? Do you know if setting power steering up on these is fairly straightforward and do you know if they work well or have any common issues?
Thanks for whatever help and advice you can give me on these questions!
