overhauling a 310-T in 1855 , need some advice
from the oliver techs. here . 1st engine ran fine
all the way around , blown head gasket which in
return beat the block deck , so i need to know
what min. deck hieght spec. is from crank center
to top of deck , & or how much can be surfaced off
safely without cutting pistons , ive read so many
things on here some counterdict one another so
would like to confirm some things i think to be
correct ,
1-valves should project about deck @ int. .014 -
.029 exh. .026 - .041 (update 1977)
2-replace rod bolts & torque to 50 ft.lbs.-1 time
3-head bolt torque 210 ft lbs inner- 180 ft lbs
outer (updated from old 133 ft lbs ? )
4-replace pin bushing to 1 piece style
5-ballance rods & piston assmbly within 1 once
6-liner pro. .004 above deck
7-deepen oil pan sump & lengthen p/u tube
also should rods be bored true center to center ,
am i missing any updates to this engine , im at
the point now that my ducks need to be in one row
, i would also like to thank everyone who has
posted updates , ideas , & fixes that have kept
these 310's alive

I would recommend having the block line bored. The 1955 I rebuilt was way out. The balance was way out as well. Check to make sure your balancer is still good.

I also want to have a block decked. Called a place in Ohio today that has done some. They told me there is no published specification but they regularly take .010 off and have not had trouble. Also said to not exceed .015. I have one block that's stamped -.007 from some time in it's past. It does not appear that they trimmed the pistons. That's all I found out so far.

In addition to what you posted I had rods, cam, lifters and crank cryogenic treated and the harmonic balancer rebuilt. Installing a new oil cooler. I also had to have 2 of 3 cams reground and refaced the lifters.

I agree on the line bore. Did you measure the piston protrusion before ? If not do it. There were also some bulletins on helping the oil pressure problem, but I need an engine number to start with. Did you get my e-mail?

sorry didnt get any e-mail , i will post engine number asap , i know its the new style block because of head gasket it used , but it was built befor the factory updates where done , just has the dealer add ons , like filter mount oil cooler , i think it also has larger turbo oil lines , lift pump was removed for gravity feed to the pump & so on , thanks i will post engine serial soon
