2-105 injector pump trouble?

If you hold your thumb over the return line inlet on the filter housing the tractor will run. And little or no fuel comes out the bottom of the pump. Should it? And fuel pressure builds up coming out the return line (backwards) should there be a ck valve or ball in the filter housing. thanks I'm baffled.

Does the supply pump work OK, the two check valves inside can come loose. There is not much fuel that comes out of pump return, and the supply pump should put supply pressure to both lines through the filter base. Make sure the base constant bleed oriface is open as it bleeds any air that gets to the filter out before it can get to the injection pump, causing shutdown. Had a 2-85 recently that the supply pump was bad, could get it to run about 5 minutes before it shut down with system full of air.

Were you ever able to determine your problem here? I was hoping you'd get a bit more input. I'm a fellow 2-105 owner, who knows very little about the tractor, and always looking for this kind of insight.
I will say that I really like the way that the Perkins engine requires very little priming after being run out of fuel (compared to a Deere). This has happened a few times, as I've struggled with the whole two tank thing.
