Buda service manual, I&T manual and COOP parts book all mention a felt oil wick for the ball seat of the rocker arms. I've had a couple of them apart and never found any trace of a wick. Does anybody know the true story?

That information is correct. They are a tiny piece of felt shaped like a pencil eraser but about 1/10 th the size.

With the improvements of oil in the past 70 years, do you think that it is still necessary?

I don't think its needed as long as you have movement of plenty of oil through the rocker arm assy. Just my opinion Irv

The felt wicks had deteriorated/long gone on my 90 when I took it over.

I used pipe cleaners secured to the rocker arms to get some lube to the valve stem end of the rocker arm. It worked. But remember, this old engine only turns at 1125 governed speed.

The balls and seats are in very good shape so the wicks probably don't matter much. This one already had aftermarket cylinder kits and -.002 rod bearings when FIL bought it back in the '70s. I stopped using it because it had near zero oil pressure. The pump was shot and the mains were so bad it had to go to -.020 to clean up. The rod bearings are in real good shape if anybody needs a set. 6 cyl.

90owner: I'm talking about the "Cockshutt" Cockshutts, not the Oliver built, unless they used Buda engines, too. I'm really not familiar with them.
