1655 starter problem

Have a 1655 with a intermittent starter problem
where it won't crank over. Seems worse when it is
out in the cold. It is in a heated shop now and
hasn't caused any problems. When it acts up it
won't dim the lights so it's not drawing a lot of
current. Did some voltage drop tests and had .53
volt drop across the solenoid. Do you think this
is enough to cause a problem? It is a gas tractor
with a diesel starter. Thanks.

Does the solenoid click??? If it does not then you have poor battery connections some place. If it clicks then try jumping across the 2 big studs and see if it spins over if it does likely to be a bad solenoid

Yes it does click. All electrical gets it's power from big stud on solenoid. Since lights don't dim when it wont turn over I think either solenoid or starter.

As I said jumper across both big terminals on the solenoid and if it spins over it is a bad solenoid if not then the starter

This goes without saying, but just be d*mn sure that the tractor is in neutral when you do that.

Since you say worse in the cold, and has not bothered since in the heated shop, perhaps you are getting some moisture into either the solenoid or starter and it's freezing, causing the issue? (due to the fact the lights aren't dimming, I'd assume the solenoid)

Not an Oliver, but my Allis-Chalmers I push snow with will occasionally seem to "lock up" the starter or solenoid after pushing snow every now and then.. solenoid will click, but no crank.. hit the button a few times and it usually will crank and take off. Never bothered all warm weather season, but has a couple times this winter now.

To test Old's theory, you'd have to wait for it to act up again, then test.

We had a problem wit hour 1655 diesel cranking. Iy did not seem to hold the solenoid in properly. Turned out we repaired it with a new key switch.
