88 Air Cleaner Question

Greetings all:

I just purchased an 88 and have started working on tearing it down. I want to take the oil bath air cleaner apart, but can't for the life of me figure out how to get that retainer off so I can remove the metal element. I can't seem to find the answer anywhere, so either I'm missing something obvious, or maybe it's not supposed to come apart.

Thanks for your time!

Pretty sure they dont come apart without cutting it. I think they are spot welded in. On all of my Olivers I just ran some cleaner through it or gas along with a hot water bath. Then blow it out with compressed air. I have heard of guys gutting them by cutting them apart and then stuffing a dry air filter in them with no oil. Are you in Iola Wisconsin by chance?

Thanks Schim! Yeah, I think it's spot welded in place, but thought maybe there was a trick to it. I'll try cleaning it, per your suggestion.

Yes, Iola, WI. You nearby?
