Three speed service

I installed a few new parts in my 2-150 in the three speed last
year and split again a few days ago to address some leaks. It
is leaking the ATF from the circle looking housing which has a
line going into it on the rear end of the three speed. If memory
serves me right there is an o ring in there that is about 6"
around. That o ring I ordered from agco and it seemed to big
from the beginning and I had a hard time getting it to seat in
there before I bolted it all back together. I imagine that is what
is wrong as far as that leak. I plan on getting it apart and
ordering a o ring that is smaller so it goes together easier. Has
anyone else had that problem with that o ring not dealing or
fitting together well? Also I had ATF leaking into the rear end I
think. I don't think it was hydraulic fluid. I noticed it one day
when the floorboards started to get a little warm so I parked it
and checked the rear end fluid via the plug near the pto and it
was overfull and seemed red. What seal should I check out for
that to happen?
Thanks
I hope I gave enough info for someone to get me on the right
track!

I put one back together last fall. I greased that big o-ring real good before I slid it back together. If you're leaking from the Over/Under,there's a seal in the back of the unit, maybe two,it escapes me right now,but when you slide the PTO short shaft back in to the O/U,put it in from the rear. If you slide it in from the front, you run the risk of rolling the lip on the seal.
Also,it's not a good idea to run automatic transmission fluid in those units on those higher horsepower tractors,it's too thin and leads to premature failure. Run HyTran type oil in it.

Ok I hadn't heard that before as I thought the book called for ATF. I'll take the thing apart tomorrow and get a good idea of what's causing the leak as it should be pretty obvious. Second question though, the spanner nut I think it is called on the back of the unit was not tight once I split the tractor, I know that I tightened it and used the locking thing last year. Any idea on how that could happen? As far as the pto input shaft I slid that in from the rear last time, but I can't get it to slide out this time, I removed the o ring snap ring and plug from the back of tractor and it slides back about a foot but then hangs up. I don't think it will be a problem though because I technically shouldn't need to remove it to reassemble should I?

I don't know about any of that other stuff. Mine was out of a 2-135. They're a different animal.

I had that same problem with the Pto shaft when I replaced the clutches in my Pto. Now my three speed mysteriously gets either hyd oil or trans oil pumped into it. Hopefully I can get that problem solved soon. Just be careful to not force things...

Did you have any problems splitting the tractor, or any advice?

Only advice is block it well. We split it in about three hours but we have a nice shop with overhead hoist. Just be careful, don't force it, and make sure you have enough room ahead of you so that once it slides off the pto input shaft you have enough room to work on it!

Both issues could be the rear seal - output shaft. A more likely possibility for a leak into the transmission is the seal inside the o/u between the back of the input shaft and the front of the output shaft. A leak from the o/u to the transmission in the quantity you're suggesting would mean you're dumping new atf into the o/u all the time. Is that the case, or no?

The little o-rings for the oil passage to over clutch piston and the oil passage for the counter shaft could be your external leak also. The over clutch passage sees the most pressure on any o-ring on the back of the o/u.

Regarding the pto shaft hanging up, keep turning and pulling - it will line up and come out. No, you don't have to pull it out completely but you might as well to make sure you're clear of the o/u output shaft.

Thanks for the reply, sounds like you're pretty familiar with this model. I haven't got the three speed opened up yet, cows kept me busy past few days. And yes, I was adding fluid to the over under to finish up my last 10 acres or so of field work last spring. Once I realized it emptied into the trans I parked it until this week.

I have never worked on a 2-150. But, if it has a one piece pto shaft. I always use a threaded rod with a nut welded on one end. Use an impact wrench with the threaded end threaded into the pto shaft. Just pull, turn shaft slowly and impact. It should come out in less than a minute or two. Works every time. I think the trouble is the shaft is twisted just a little bit with use over the years.
