Hi guys,
I am now on to repairing the pto on my 1655 diesel. It has trouble shutting off. I also hear a chattering in there. I have adjusted the linkage all the way and you still have to pull the lever extremely hard to get it to stop. The pto housing looks similar to my 88 and completely different than my 1755 or 1850. I am figuring I need to replace the clutches. I have been told it will either have 5 or 7 clutches. I thought I had a manual for the 1655, but apparently I don't. Do I pull off the outer cover with the 4 smaller bolts to get at the clutches or do I have to continue and also take off the 2 larger bolts that hold the whole housing on to the tractor? I am assuming the long shaft will come out with it right? Once I have it out what am I looking for and how do the clutches come off? Thanks for any advice for taking it apart.

You need to remove the 4-5/16 inch cap screws from the round cover. Put a small pan under it because there is oil in there other wise you have a big mess. You need a very good pair of Tru-arc snap ring pliars to remove the long shaft. You will need a good pair of external snap ring pliars to remove the snap ring holding the clutch to the shaft. More questions? post a phone number. J.

Thanks again for your help Mr. Schwiebert on my 1655. Sorry for the long winded questions. I dug into the pto today. I originally thought it could be the clutches. What I found was the big snap ring was out just rolling around the shaft. Also there is a little snap ring on the outside and one on the inside and the groove on the small shaft is worn about 2-3 times as wide as the snap ring for both snap rings.
1.) Could this much wear on the shaft snap ring grooves cause the big snap ring to be forced out of the groove? Thus causing me not to be able to get the pto shaft to stop very well?

2.)The small shaft that the snap rings are on slides in and out fairly easy. I only pulled it out a couple of inches. Can I pull it out all the way if I want to replace this shaft because of the worn snap ring grooves? Is it supposed to be moving that far? I don't want to pull it out and drop a gear or something down in the rear end. Or do you think some thing has come apart on the back side of this shaft? If so I assume I have to pull the whole housing off to repair.
The serial # of the tractor is 220 036 490
the model # is 565 22012
On a side not when using the pto on a flair chopper or haybine it never slipped, I just had trouble getting it to shut the implement off.
Again I really appreciate the help.

One more question. The small shaft that goes through the pto clutches and has worn snap ring grooves that I am talking about. Is this the shaft that goes all the way up to the flywheel?

O. K. The small shaft that is in the center of the clutch spider is the long shaft that is splined in the flywheel. You need to let the snapring on the back of the spider ON to remove the long shaft. There are 2 moon shaped openings in the spider. Look through one of those and you will see a Tru-arc snap ring. You may need to turn the PTO output shaft ( release the brake so you can turn the output shaft) till you find the 2 holes in that snap ring. Release the snap ring from the groove so it is free. Get a carpenter's wrecking bar and get one end on a spider tooth. Push on the bar and pop the long shaft out. Pull the shaft out. Then look at the snap ring that I think you are telling me is loose. Loosen one end of the pressure lube line so you can remove the complete clutch (it should slide off) and then call me. so I still need your phone number. NO gears will fall down. J.
