1600 Oliver diesel

Worked on a 1600 today with my buddy JJ. The tractor has sat for a few years and engine fired up but does have a slight miss. I cracked one line at a time by each injector didn't notice much change after. Where would you guy's go next? Pull injector's, energy cell's, or compression test. For compression test do you pull energy cell and make adapter? Had leaky seam on radiator and only one slotted side plate bolt gave us a problem. He put pics on facebook and its going to be used on the farm again. Greg

Thanks Chuck, the old girl didn't get much run time but was just trying to see what worked. The owner doesn't need it right now so if need to pull the head now is the time. I still would like to know how you guys do compression test. Checked serial number and we are the same age and we both need work! Greg

If its a slight miss not a dead miss like the cylinder not firing at all I'd put in fresh fuel with some Marvel Mystery Oil and a can of Seafoam and then run it pretty hard before tearing into the mechanics.Probably has an injector slightly sticking. Also I'd put in new fuel filters and check for any water in the fuel system, even the slightest bit of water will make a diesel act up.

Diesel compression tests are done with the injectors out and a special adapter used in the injector hole, energy cells are left in place.
Most diesel test gauges will go to 600 to 800 PSI as a gas engine tester does not go high enough. Most diesels will have 300 to 450 PSI, but see what the service manual calls for.

Traditional Farmer, right now it only has a slight miss and once the farmer gets it hooked onto the spreader it will be good enough. We have it inside right now and was thinking if need to check energy cells or valves now is a good time because radiator is off getting repaired. Has other little things needs brake housing seals, PTO will not stop turning and has some brass shims on one side and flat washers on the other. We only messed with it for a couple hours so was just looking for opinions. Thanks Greg

There are some pretty cheap kits on ebay for diesel compression checking. For do a do it yourself guy, I do not see why they would not be suitable.

Diesel tech, thanks, I have diesel compression tester and wondered if test could be done on energy cell side, looked like it would be easier. I don't have adapter for Lavona injector either. Thanks for the help. Greg
