1655 Diesel wont start

Love this tractor, but cant get it started right now.

Last two times it started, I was sporadiclly losing power to all the guages, but it did still start.

Last time, when I turned the manifod heater on, i only got a clicking noise and then lost all power. All guages are dead and I have nothing.

New battery, cables are good, and I did replace the ignition switch. Still no power.

What is next to check starter and solonoid?

take another look at the ground cable, they can look fine on the outside and be corroded on the inside. Chuck

Have you had the battery checked (even thou its new)? Have you checked the neutral starting switch? Have you used a screw driver to jump across the solenoid to see if it cranks? You could pull the cover off the top of the dash and touch a jumper wire from the battery wire to the assesory wire to see if the gauges move , And you can jump from the bat wire to the starter wire to see if the switch is bad or not and if it cranks. Also you can do the same thing to see if the lights work or not. As others have said check your cables to make sure there good and clean and making good contact. Bandit

As another said, check the neutral safety switch. There is also one on the clutch linkage. Another point to check would be battery ground locations. Could be loose or corroded there.

Electrical gremlins can be a headache at times.

First Things First...

Are you sure it will run at all? Do you have a friend with a tractor and chain? New batteries and cables won't fix a starter problem, nor will it fix a tractor that just won't run any way. I would attack it from the standpoint of will it run at all? A 1655 will run all day with the electric and key off, and the only thing you will miss are the electric gauges. Start with the friend and the chain and work backwards from there, either to fuel/motor problems, or towards the electrical system.

The process of elimination will help you faster that throwing $$$ at it. You may have a bad key switch or an electrical draw down.

Good Luck!

Ron

If you are loosing all power then it most likely is in the battery leads.New cables don't necessarily mean good cables.Poor quality battery cables are common these days.I've been making my own with heavy duty truck ends and welding leads.

I had our 1650 quit while I was mowing one day, just died. Found that the wire from the starter to the switch was so badly corroded on one end it failed to make the connection. Traced by using a simple light tester as I moved up the wiring. Gas job of course.
