On my 1650 Diesel there is a wire coming front the
alt. to a ceramic resistor. I believe it then goes
back to the I position on the key switch. It has the
newer style alt. with the internal regulator. What
is the purpose of this resistor?

O. K. your 1650 had the older Delco alternator when new and that is the bracket where the regulator was placed. Since someone replaced it with the 10Si Oliver furnished a wiring diagram on what needed to be changed if you converted over to the new style. I think a resistor was mentioned on the diagram. I will need to look here in the next couple of days.

Thanks John. Post when you find out. The wiring dia. in the operators manual does not show it, but that dia. is for the older style alt.

The resistor is to limit backflow current from the alternator #1 terminal back to the ignition switch after the ign is turned "off" and the engine coasts down. Without the resistor backflow current is sufficient to fire the coil after the ign is turned off so the engine will continue to run.

However the resistor is not needed on a diesel since there's no ignition coil. Suspect yours has it because it was included in a "universal" 10SI conversion kit to fit both gas and diesel engines.
