remove lift arms from bracket on 1650

I need to remove the lift arm where it is attached by a pin through the bracket attached to the lower rear housing. I removed the bolt beside the pin. The pin can be pulled out about 1/4", but that is all. Seems like the pin might have some wear groove which is hanging up. I tried taking the weight off of the lift arm while pulling on the pin with a vice grip- no luck. The pin is in the middle hole of the three holes, I can't get to the back side to drive it out. This can't be too hard, any suggestions would be appreciated.

The pin could be rusted in the ball like mine was. Tried penetrant for months. The ball was really sloppy in the arm so I wedged it outward with a couple of chisels and hit it with a hammer every few days. I ended up cutting the pin on both sides of the ball with a hack saw. I still can't get the pin out of the ball even with a 12 ton press.

That's a hardened pin. I used a thin cutoff wheel to cut it on both sides of the ball. I tried to drive it out with a press, no luck. It's soaking in de-rusting fluid (Search WD-40 rust remover). Hoping that will loosen it enough. I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks Mike and OC-4. I did not know that it would be that hard to remove. Have either of you tried heating the pin and ball with a torch after you cut it out to break the rust bond?

The pin is a harder steel like 4140, which is what I made new pins from, but not hardened. I used a good metal cutting blade in a reciprocating saw and kept the blade speed slow. It's hard to get a blade into the bracket. I wedged it outward and put vice-grip on the head of the pin to keep it from turning, and cut the inside first to I could still clamp the head for the second cut. Trouble with heating is that you can't really get a good pull on it. I have to replace balls anyway, they're really wore out.

You said the pin comes out about a quaerter of an inch. Can you turn the pin with vise grips or a pipe wrench? If it turns and the ball turns with it you will have to jam the ball with a wedge to break it free.if the ball is not rusted to the pin it probably is a groove and turning it a certain way might work it out.

Clamp vice grips to the part you can get a hold on and work it back and forth or weld something like a piece of key stock to the end of the pin to give you something to pry or tap on.Or weld a small nut on the end and get on it with an impact wrench.
