In the Oliver Collector article about the 1850 Kevin remarked that Waukesha had no interest in developing higher horsepower engines, especially diesel. Seems kind of odd really. Waukesha builds some huge lp and natural gas engines for industrial use. I know they did get out of the diesel engines completly. Maybe they saw the clean air technology coming and didn't want to mess with it in small engines? Maybe they saw the turmoil in WMC coming and were ready to end their marriage with Oliver/White?

If I had to guess Waukesha had to spread the cost of developing a new engine over more units than Oliver was going to build and did not have another market for that engine to go. Massey sourced motors extensively and might have been a possibility but maybe Oliver told Waukesha that Waukesha could not market to another ag manufacturer. Talking to people who were in the industry then you can sense that a lot of employees felt consolidation was coming and maybe took longer than anticipated when it happened in the 1980's.
