Working on the 'new' 1550 yesterday, redid the carb and put it on the tractor, new gas line with filter. It started right up and fuel issues seemed resolved but the dead miss was still in it,pulled some spark plug wires #5 doing nothing plus
right much racket coming from under the valve cover area.Oh Boy.Pulled the valve cover off #5 Intake valve stuck open, gently turned the valve with vice grips and it popped right up.Oiled it good and fired up the engine, ran perfect, good oil pressure,no smoke, no blow by.I'm a happy(and relieved) camper.Looks like a good deal after all.

It's always a good feeling when you think you're in for a lot of work but it ends up being simple like that.

So, out of curiosity, had this tractor been setting for quite some time? Inside or out?

The fellow quit using it for haymaking about 2 years ago and it was outside.Today I changed the oil in the engine when I started it up it started smoking, wasn't doing it before. Then I realized I had
put the air cleaner hose back on the carb while the oil was draining. The air cleaner had a mixture of oil and water cleaned that up and no more smoke.

My brother had a 1550 diesel that the valve guides were so wore that the valves would stick often. He left the valve cover loose and carried a short pry bar on the tractor. When a valve would stick, he would lift the valve cover and smack the valve stem with the pry bar to free it up and keep going.
When I was a kid, I worked for a guy who would add a few gallons of diesel fuel to his gas tractors when plowing with them, he said it helped lube the valves and kept them from sticking. Chris
