I haven't had time to work on the 1550 recently but hopefully I will before hay season. But the lack of time hasn't stopped me from thinking about it--especially at night! The 1550's have a tilting steering column. They also extend and retract--well mine doesn't. I can't turn the chrome knob to loosen. I'm afraid to put much more on it for fear of breaking the shaft. Is there a spot to get some oil in there to help free it up or does something have to be disassembled?

Can you pry the plastic Oliver shield cap out of the center and take the nut off that's under it? If you pop that hand hold cover off then that'll give you access to pour oil or penetrant right down the inside of the hollow shaft.

Its been a while cense I had one apart but I think if you take the lock off (the part you spin) and the steering wheel off you can get oil down inside it and loosen it all up to get it to work again. I think that's the way I did one. Bandit

I've had the chrome wheel off before. I didn't pour anything down the tube but will try that. It would be nice if I could get that freed up. It's not terribly uncomfortable where it is but would be nice to adjust it a little more.

Once you get it where you can turn that threaded rod, what that does is,pull a wedge shaped piece up to hold the shaft tight. It's like the gooseneck on bicycle handlebars where it goes in the fork.
