1850 Perkins Engine Number

The HPOC 1850 feature gives the Perkins engine serial number ranges. My 1850 Cockshutt has a block that is either black or more likely no paint. The number is 354U13032 which is totally different than in the magazine. Does anyone know what this block is?

I read that in the magazine as well. It is not the complete story. Perkins has used 3 different engine numbering systems. The engine numbers that start with 8 was the original system. In 1968 that system was replaced by the second system which is what you have. The first 3 numbers indicate the size of the engine(354). The letter indicates what country the engine was built in which U means United Kingdom. If you read my article and there is a mistake in my article as well you will notice that those engines were made in other countries as well. The third system was when Perkins went to the system using "build numbers" as used on later White models. More questions? J.

My serial number is 183-958 which should be a 1967. It has the original cast valve cover and it is leaking. What gasket should I get?

The correct gasket for the cast iron valve cover is 165990A. There are 2 gaskets under that number. One is a viton gasket and the other is a cork/composite gasket. You want the VITON gasket. One easy way to know which is which is the price. The viton will be over $100.00 while the cork will be around $15.00.
