Oliver Starter Update

Well had a chance to do some experimenting late yesterday. The factory diesel starter off the White
2-70 diesel won't work on the Oliver 1550 gas because its too long and its too big in diameter to work with the
1550 gas throttle linkage. However the new small sized gear reduction starter I bought for the
2-70 bolted right up and clears the throttle linkage.Plus it really cranks the 1550.For general information these starters can be bought at a couple places off the 'Net for $133.Companies are something like Real Electric and Rauketen probably both names are spelled wrong. The same starter is also sold by others for up to $250+ so you need to look some.

I bought one about a year ago. It seems to work good. Starts a 5.9 in a 1950.
Still like to find parts reasonable to fix my nippondenso starter. Cheapest one I could find was around $400. Makes the Chinese starter a good alternative.

You are making an assumption by looking at pictures that all starters are the same. They may look the same, but they are not. The cheap starters come with plastic bushings which don't fare well when over cranked. They also have lighter windings poor quality material for solenoid contacts. Like any imported product, they will build them as cheap or as good as you want.

There are multiple manufacturers that make the same model starter. Some are Chinese, some are Indian. And even within one manufacturer, they have different quality levels. What you want to find is a vendor who tests each starter here in the US and does audit tear downs of a few starters in each batch to ensure the spec'd components were actually delivered. The $133 starters pretty much go off the boat and to your door. It's your money so roll the dice as you see fit. Maybe you'll get lucky :)

Actually I've had pretty good luck with the cheap starters I bought a $62 starter for my Cub Cadet
1782 with a Kubota diesel in it a couple years ago and its worked fine spins the engine faster and easier than the original, CC dealer wanted something around $375 for a new one. This one should have an easy life on the gasser 1550.They are guaranteed for a year.
