inherited an 880

My father-in-law recently passed on to the big tractor shed in the sky & left us an oliver 880 in somewhat running condition along with about a dozen older olivers.I grew up on the other green,so I'm not too familiar with these, but they are growing on me.My question is about the high/low or whatever it's called. it grinds when I try to shift it & is very hard to keep in gear.the fork around the throwout bearing is very worn, not sure that's the whole problem though. Are these units expensive to repair? Can they be deleted? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanx in advance

When shifting gears try moving the hydro-power to the low side and see if it shifts any easier.

A quirk with those Olivers is that they can be hard to shift sometimes in direct drive but moving the 2 speed hydra-power to low side usually eases things quite a bit.

Restoring excessively worn parts to better condition, should not be all that expensive on an Oliver but it will still not fix the the nature of having to go to low to improve shifting. Just the nature of Olivers with the 2 speed or even the 3 speed for that matter from what I hear.

The two speed can be deleted parts are usually pretty easy to find.Unlike most Oliver owners I'm not a fan of the hydra power units since I don't use mine for tillage I don't need to shift on the go and 6 speeds is fine for me.Took the one out of my 1650 like it better that way.

The two speed in the 770/880 is NOT a Hydro-Power Drive. It is called Power Booster, and is a dry clutch system like the MTA/400/450 IH T-A. When you say engaging do you mean pulling the handle towards you into low, or pushing forward into high?

I'm kinda confused yet, "It grinds when I try to shift it". Are you shifting gears in the transmission and it grinds? Check clutch adjustment to be sure the clutch is releasing. Or is the Power Booster grinding and jumping out of gear? Chris

its the two speed that grinds.the shift handle hooks to a shift fork that fits around what looks like a throwout bearing. There is a cooling fan behind that. the only way I can get it in gear is to pry on the fork/bearing with the tractor shut off,not sure if its in high or low,but it moves enough to get it in the shop.I will get a repair manual for it if I decide its worth fixing, but meanwhile thanx for the input

You can go to www.agcopartsbooks.com and log in as a guest and look at the parts break down. It may give you clues. The clutch in the Power-Booster is an overcenter unit very similar to the PTO clutch, in fact it uses the same discs.
